How To Create A Box Frame Keepsake by Anjie
As soon as I saw this collection I fell in love! I wanted to create something special with it and share with you the steps. Here’s how to create a box frame keepsake with the Beyond The Bay collection!
Items needed:
White card stock
Black card stock
Craft Master Foiling Pen (optional)
- 1) In MCS I used scene 13 and from the scene building folder put To The Beach 01 over the top and grouped. I shrunk them to the size I wanted. I used 13.5 by 19.5, and printed them out.
- 2) I then printed out To The Beach images 01, 02, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 10, the ship twice and both the boys 3 times. Cut them all out and make some decoupage for the ship and boys.
- 3) Cut two pieces of card as high as your background and 13 cm wide, and two pieces as wide as your background piece by 12 cm. So mine were two 19.5 x 13 cm and two 13.5 x 12 cm. If you do more than the 5 layers, adjust the second measurement to suit.
- 4) Score down the pieces at the odd cm’s, so 1, 3, 5 etc. Then turn over and score on the even cm’s, 2, 4, 6 etc. This makes folding and scoring easier and stops the card from cracking.
- 5) On the first score line create and mountain fold, the second a valley, burnishing as you go to make the folds crisp.
- 6) Put glue on the first part of the card on one of the long pieces, and then on every alternate score line as shown. Use wet glue to give you wiggle room, you’ll need it.
- 7) Bring up one of the short pieces and slot the folds together, this is tricky so a little patience is needed. You may need to wiggle them up and down until they fit snuggly. Then squeeze them together until they are firmly glued. Then do this with the next long piece to make the top and both sides. Don’t put the last piece in or you won’t get your layers in.

- 8) Slot your back piece in and if it fits ok bring it out and put glue on the top and two sides of the layer, on the back and slide into place. If it seems to tight trim a bit off of the sides. This may happen if your scores aren’t precise.
- 9) Do this for all the layers lining everything up.
- 10) Now to glue the bottom on. Do the glue as you did before on every alternante fold and slot in between the two side pieces. Take your time with this and get it right. Then you have a layered box frame.

- 11) Next I cut out a frame in black card so it covered all the white. If you do it a few mm’s bigger it will hide any uneven frames underneath it.
- 12) Then build up any decoupage pieces you may have. I left it to here to do this so I wouldn’t damage any putting the frame together. I then put some finger wax around the edges to make it look like gilded pages in a book.
- 13) To create the book cover measure in 5mm more than your width and score. So for me it was 14cm. Then stand your inner piece next to the score line and mark it and score there. This gives you the spine, and trim the back piece down should you need to to match the width of the front.
- 14) Optional. I cut out a stencil from the In the Studio Stylish Stencils and used my foiling pen to create some nice decorative corners. You coud also do this using some die cuts, Tattered Lace do some fabulous frames and borders you could use.
- 15) Finally glue a piece of white card inside the front flap, to write on. And glue the back of your box frame to the inside back panel. You should now have what resembles a book, and a great keepsake. You could foil down the spine what it is. You could use your own photos of a holiday on this background. Or use photos from a wedding for a lovely keepsake.
I hope you enjoy this project and I can’t wait to see you versions, please share them in the Highlight Your Creativity group.
