How to use Two Red Robins Dies

Using a low tack repositionable tape, attach your die to the medium you wish to cut, blade (raised) side down. The tape keeps your die in place either on your plain medium or over your Reflection image to allow for accurate alignment. In the instance that your plates may be a little worn this also enables you to rotate the die during multiple cuts without it moving and causing a mis-cut.

Place the die and medium between the plates as per the manufacturer’s instructions for your die cutting machine, and run through the machine to complete your die cut. You may need to rotate the die and medium and repeat the process of running through the machine to achieve a complete cut on more detailed designs.

Once your die cut is complete remove the tape. If the die cut remains in the die you can either tap the die blade side away on the edge of your desk, (although this may result in the small elements from the die cut flying across your craft room!) or use a pokey tool to remove the die cut and any small pieces. We recommend that you remove any small pieces of medium from within the die each time you use it so that it is ready for your next cut.

Two Red Robins dies are designed to work with all home manual and electric die cutting machines.

How do I ensure my Reflections line up with my dies?

The Two Red Robins Reflections are pre coloured downloadable images that help you by creating a perfectly coloured die cut every time. Should you find that the print out doesn’t line up exactly please check your printer settings. We recommend printing to ‘actual size’ to ensure the best match for your Reflection. Depending on your printer you will see different options but make sure that you do not select “Fit to Page” or any option that scales the image you are printing. You should also ensure that if your printer allows borderless printing that this is switched off and all scaling options are set to 100%. The Reflections downloads are A4 sized pdfs (29.7cm x 21cm), but you should be able to print the correct size of design on other paper sizes (e.g. letter) if the above settings are correct.

How do I know what ‘sandwich’ of plates to use for my machine?

All die cutting machines come with a unique set of recommended sandwiches of cutting plates. Please refer to your manufacturer’s instruction booklet for detailed instructions on your machine. In time you will see your cutting plates starting to show signs of wear and tear, this is completely normal when a die cutting machine is used on a regular basis. To lengthen the life of your plates we recommend using a range of shims.  Metal and magnetic shims are can be found from a number of retailers, these all work in a similar way, simply place in between the flat side of your die and the base plate to give you extra pressure when die cutting. A spot shim can be used by cutting or tearing a piece of card to place if your plates are a little worn and you are finding a specific die difficult to cut, simply place the shim behind the area that isn’t cutting and use the regular sandwich for your machine.

Why are some of my dies joined by metal tabs?

Many of our dies are produced to stay together as this will allow you to cut pieces that are required to be used together e.g. decoupage layers easily without losing small pieces. Please do not try to separate these as the tabs are thicker than other dies and you may damage your product. There are dies from other brands that are created with smaller tabs, these will separate with use as the pressure of the machine will weaken the tabs. If you would prefer to separate these yourself we do recommend using either a pair of old scissors or jewellery / wire snips rather than bending to break them as this could leave sharp pieces behind. You avoid damaging the design area of the die, if the gaps in between the die elements are small you should push the snips up towards the front from the back so that just the tips are through and then snip.

How do I add the cut pieces back into my die cut?

On some of our designs there are elements that pop out which, whilst we consider them to be waste, depending on the project you may want to place back in, this technique is called paper piecing.

Simply place a piece of tape on the back of your die cut and pop the pieces back into position, the tape will hold it in place.

What collection is my die in?

You can find which collection your die is in by checking the back of the packaging, find the die on the website and check the Additional Information tab, or download our die collection list:
