Birthday Quilt Project – 2 weeks to go!

So, it was finally quilting time. I ripped up the bed sheet and cut this and my quilt batting larger than my finished quilt top size. I have always done this with previous quilts and it just helps if anything shifts while quilting for it to not matter to much if you get to the other end and it doesn’t line up!

I laid it all out my living room floor and smoothed everything out as best I could and pinned it with as many pins as I had!

I decided to go with the “stitch in the ditch” pattern for the quilting, it’s what I’ve always done and am comfortable with.

Plus my sewing machine is very basic, it’s not the best for quilting as the isn’t a lot of room to put the quilt when I’m moving it along. So it helps to be able to roll it up and just quilt in long straight sections. Once I got to the middle, I started again from the other end and worked my way into the middle. This helped having too much of the quilt rolled up within the machine.

Once I’d quilted all the vertical lines, I rotated the quilt and did the same for the horizontal. There was only a couple of places on the back where the fabric tucked a bit but I’m not going to get too annoyed about that.

I feel like it’s not as thick as previous quilts I’ve made, I’ve used the same batting so I can’t remember if I might have used a double layer, or if it’s just the same and I’m remembering it wrong. But it looks and feels great and it will be perfect for what my daughter will want to use it for so I’m happy with it.

Now it’s all quilted I just needed to trim all the excess batting and backing fabric off, and now the last thing to do is the binding! Nearly there!
